Beware the CGT Loan Trap

When you provide Bitcoin as collateral for a loan, this action itself might trigger a capital gains tax (CGT) event - not just when you sell Bitcoin. The trigger for CGT is a "change in beneficial ownership." Red flags: legal terms stating a change of beneficial ownership when providing collateral, pooled collateral where your Bitcoin goes into a shared pool, and re-hypothecation where the platform can lend out your collateral.
